What Kind of Learner Are You?
Some people are touchers, some are listeners and some are watchers.
Everyone learns differently, and it is often helpful to know early on
what kind of learning suits you best. Complete this simple quiz to
discover your dominant learning style.
1. If I describe my travels to others,
a) I tell them what people I met said to me.
b) I use lots of gestures to describe where I was and what I saw.
c) I show pictures and movies from my trip.
2. If I have to find a solution to something,
a) I like to share the problem with others and hear what they think.
b) I move objects on my desk around while I’m thinking.
c) I draw circles, squares and lines on paper to explore how issues connect.
3. If I bump into people I‘ve met,
a) I need to hear their names before I’m sure who they are.
b) I can picture the place and time we met.
c) I recognize their faces instantly.
4. If I’m learning to do something,
a) I listen carefully to all instructions.
b) I just open my mind and wait to see what happens!
c) I like to study illustrations and diagrams, charts and tables.
5. If I read a short story or novel,
a) I really like hearing how the characters talk to each other.
b) I wish I were watching the story on television instead.
c) I feel I can almost touch the objects, people and places being described.
6. If I have to type a word I don’t know too well,
a) I say the word out loud first.
b) I type the word, then look at it to check if it’s correctly spelled.
c) I quietly imagine how the word is spelled.

b) I keep jumping up and interrupting myself… almost on purpose.

8. If I have to assemble a barbeque,

9. When I have to remember a phone number,

Now gather your answers by totaling your choices in categories
a), b), and c).
If most of your choices are a) You are an auditory learner.
You prefer learning as a listener. You are attentive and respectful.
You learn well in lecture and seminar settings. You
are comfortable asking people to restate ideas when you don’t understand.
When you speak, you like to be understood and you take great care to make
sure that people have heard you correctly.
If most of your choices are b) You are a kinesthetic and tactile learner.
You prefer learning as a toucher, physically interacting with the world around you.
You like to work with your hands, and prefer learning by trying.
You’re not afraid to get dirty.
If most of your choices are c) You are a visual learner.
You prefer learning as a watcher. For you, seeing is believing.
You like charts and diagrams, and prefer maps to
mere instructions. When you see something, you remember it.
Knowing what kind of learner you are is particularly useful when learning
to drive. Let your instructor know if you have taken the quiz and what
type of learning technique suits you best. This will come in particularly
useful when doing the maneouvres.
As a lifelong learner, picking the right opportunities is critical.
Acknowledging your dominant learning style can make a big difference.
